I have to admit, people tend to say things when their friend or someone they know is going overseas to start a new life. Some of them will frighten you and some of them will make you laugh.
Before I headed out to Malaysia, people I know were congratulating me as well as giving me warnings before I went overseas. Here are the 5 warnings given to me before I left:
1. “People there are racists!”
But aren’t every nation has that percentage of people who are racists? I think it is one thing that every country has. However, coming over here I realized that they are not, there are some but not everyone. So chill.
2. “Be careful, I heard it’s not safe there. Don’t pull out your phones in public.”
All countries have bad apples. It’s not like the country where I came from is safe either.
3. “Everything is expensive in that country!”
Cost of living is really something to consider before deciding to live overseas. Just make sure that the salary is proportional to the standard of living in the country where you’re moving.
4. “Don’t trust the people in that country I heard they are mean/backstabbers.”
Again, every country has their bad apples. Generalizing the locals is not a good idea. The key really is not to trust easily.
5. “The police there are unjust. They will bully you.”
I am not sure why people even say this but, I find the policemen here nice. Just be a law abiding expat and they will not bother you. Also bring your passport everywhere you go.
At the end of the day, it’s upto you how you’ll handle getting along with the locals, how you’re going to adapt to your new environment and what approaches you’re going to take to make your new life comfortable and fun for you. Don’t just listen to what other people has to say and end up paranoid, living your new life in fear. Let experience teach you the lesson. Enjoy!
