Filipinos love dancing and music. We proved that right as more than 26, 000 fans, young and old, gathered at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds last June 24, 2016 to witness a one-of-a-kind outdoor live music event.
It was a truly an exciting night as a star-studded line-up of local and international artists performed explosive pop hits and dance beats.
Even the rain couldn’t stop the artists and the concert goers in having a great night. I was simply amazed! The show truly must go on.
Recorded live for global telecast under the MTV World Stage global series,MTV Music Evolution Manila 2016 will reach an international audience of more than three-quarters of a billion households in over 160 countries.MTV Asia VJs Alan Wong and Hanli Hoefer hosted the event, along with MTV Pinoy VJs Yassi Pressman and Andre Paras.
I was lucky enough to be invited to be one of their media guest. My media pass allowed me to attend the exclusive press conference held at the Sofitel Plaza Hotel.
Gary V., one of the Philippines’ legendary pop stars, started off the event with an energy-filled act. I loved it when “Mr. Pure Energy” played the kulintang (traditional local instrument) and gave it a nice modern twist. His son Gab joined him onstage as the father and son showed off their dancing prowess. Gary performed his all-time favorite hits such as “Shake It Off”, “Babalik Ka Arin”, “Sa Yahweh ang Sayaw” and “Arise” (remix version).
Up next was the country’s well-loved love team “JADINE” with opening their act with Nadine Lustre‘s “Para-Paraan” and James Reid‘s “Huwag Ka Nang Humirit”.
The couple did not fail to make their fans scream with delight as they created a rather romantic performance with a medley of “Bahala Na”, “Hanap-Hanap” and “No Erase”.
Bebe Rezha did not disappoint as the Brooklyn-Born singer and songwriter kicked off her set with her hit song “Take Me Home”. She also performed her own compositions for Rihanna “The Monster”, “Hey Mama” and “Me, Myself and I”. She ended her set with a powerful act singing “No Broken Hearts”.
Crowd favorite, A-Pink, made the event ground explode as their fans and KPOP fanatics screamed and danced during the whole set of the popular Kpop girl group. They performed their popular songs (while wearing their matching sailor suit) like “Mr. Chu”, “Remember” and “Luv”. They also sang “Attracted to You” and “No No No” alongside a massive Pinoy audience.
Pumping more energy to the already hyped up crowd was EDM trio, Far East Movement. Mixing their tracks with live rap segments and synth riffs, the three artists on stage brought the crowd to whole new levels of motion—creating a sea of raised fists all moving to the same beat. Their set featured tracks like “Push”, “G6”, “Bang It To The Curb”, and “When The Funk Drop”.
Far East Movement drove the crowd into frenzy as the audience sang along to “Rocketeer”, and later on threw giant inflatable poop emoji and a pizza while performing “Illest”, “Turn Up The Love”, and “Rattle”.
And to cap off the event was a memorable act by One Republic, the multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated quintet. They opened their set with with “Love Runs Out”. My favorite part of their performance was when Ryan Tedder and Brent Kutzle did an awesome take on their hit song “Apologize” with a piano and cello tandem. It was then followed by their hit single “Counting Stars” and new single “Wherever I Go”.
To end their already amazing set is their amazing performance of “If I Lose Myself” with an explosion of fireworks and confetti signalling the end of the MTV Music Evolution Manila 2016.
And just like during the MTV World Stage event last year, my most favorite part of this event was how we were treated like VIP by the MTV organizers. The press conference was so organized, food served to us were amazing (courtesy of Sofitel). And during the affair we were given access to the media tent where we were able to do our job in peace in an air conditioned tent as we watch the whole show comfortably. The tent was complete with seats, free internet connection, buffet dinner, snacks and huge televisions where we can watch the whole show up close. Once again, as a blogger and part of the media, I appreciate that MTV and their staff/crew valued our presence. Many thanks and kudos to all the people behind this amazing show!
