Poor House: Filipino Filmmaker Directs Korean Horror Web Series

Koreans are known for creating the creepiest and most disturbing horror movies. But did you know that there is an upcoming horror web series that is made in Korea… but directed by a Filipino?    poor house 2

Nash Ang is a multi-award winning Filipino film maker currently pursuing his Masters in Filmmaking in Seoul, South Korea. With the success of his feature film, Seoulmates, he’s at it again with his yet to be released four-part horror web series, Poor House.

I was one of the lucky few who got to see the horror web series before it is out, and I was lucky enough to be able to chat with Director Nash Ang about it.

Reia Ayunan:

What gave you the idea and inspiration to produce and direct this film?

Nash Ang:

We all think that if we are richer, life will be easier. But that’s not the case. Wealthy people have problems too such as this “house poor” problem. House poor means being relatively broke after purchasing a house or property due to the mortgage payments or other related expenses. Although your total value and worth in assets is increasing by the mere fact that you are owning a property, your monthly liquid assets are fairly tight. This is where the title poor house title was derived. It’s also a mockery of the Korean drama title “Full House”.

Nash Ang:

As a documentary filmmaker, I love making movies with social relevance. Since I started living in Korea I am slowly shifting in making narratives. So making a horror story out a current this issue in Korea is what I think a good step in my career as a filmmaker.

Reia Ayunan:

Were you directing films back in the Philippines?

Nash Ang:

I made documentary films. “Lusong” a film for GMA News TV won me the best director award at Pyongyang International Film Festival. Yes, I went to North Korea and received the award last 2012.

Reia Ayunan:

Wow Congratulations!

Nash Ang:

That was long time ago. Lol

Reia Ayunan:

When are you planning to open the web series for public viewing? And can we only view it on Youtube or you will load it up in a website dedicated for the web series?

Nash Ang:

The first episode will be shown on August 1. And rest will be released every Saturday for the whole month of August on Youtube. Then for Korea (it will shown in) Kakao, Daum TV and Naver TV.

Reia Ayunan:

How long did it take you and your team to produce this film? From casting to the filming itself?

Nash Ang:

The production started 2013. Poor house was a 2013 production. But I was so busy doing other stuff. Lol

Reia Ayunan:

And post-production was only concluded this year?

Nash Ang:

The public release is this year. It was originally a short film and travelled in film festivals around the world.

Reia Ayunan:

Wow, it was already shown in international film festivals? So cool!

Nash Ang:

Yep. In Canada, India and Serbia this year 2015 too.

Reia Ayunan:

Congratulations! When you present your short film how do they introduce it? Korean short film by a Filipino director? ‘Coz let’s face it short films in international film festivals are represented by countries right?

Nash Ang:

Yeah, confusing. It looks 100% Korean. But I do say it’s a Korean film by a Filipino director.

Reia Ayunan:

What challenges did you face in creating this film?

Nash Ang:

Language barrier!! Most of them. I think all of them doesn’t speak English!! That time I don’t speak Korean as well like I do now.

Reia Ayunan:

I can already imagine haha! But during production did something scary, weird or unusual happened? Like maybe while shooting one equipment broke all of a sudden? Or one cast got sick? And what did you do to fix the situation?

Nash Ang:

Speaking of, at the final day and final shot I suddenly got sick and (was) puking. And it’s fortunate because that was (during) the final take.

Reia Ayunan:

I assume this is your first horror film right?

Nash Ang:

Yeah, first horror film.

Reia Ayunan:

What is it like to work on a horror film?

Nash Ang:

Narrative films in general, because (originally) I was a documentary filmmaker, we need to work as a team. Because in making documentaries we usually do it in small groups or sometimes alone. And everything should be planned before the shoot. Not unlike docu. You shoot materials first.

Reia Ayunan:

Do you believe in ghosts? If yes, any personal experiences?

Nash Ang:

Actually. Hmm no Lol. If I do I’ll be scared to death. I just always think it doesn’t exist, power of believability hahaha.

Reia Ayunan:

After the web series global release, what’s your next project?

Nash Ang:

I’m writing a narrative film script based on my current research about 80 year grannies in Korea who sell energy drinks to grandpas. But in reality they not only sell energy drinks but also sell their bodies as well. I originally plan to do a documentary film about this but no one wants to face the camera because of its sensitive topic.

Reia Ayunan:

But are you still going to push through with that project despite the ordeal?

Nash Ang:

Yeah as a narrative film. This time if ever this will push though I want it to be dark, lonely and experimental but thought provoking.

Poor House is about a young couple caught in debt who decides to search for a new and much cheaper home in Seoul, but what they find instead is an imprint of terror concealed within the very city they live in. It’s a really cool web series that you should really watch out for!
