Yee Lee Lean Nurtures Good Leaders Through A.P.P.S

The moment I stepped into her office, I immediately sensed a strong vibe of positivity in the surrounding, that is possibly because Madam Yee Lee Lean, the founder of APPS Sdn Bhd, exudes an aura that is so infective you can’t help but feel empowered when you talk to her.

Let me introduce you first to Madam Lee Lean, an extraordinary leader who started out from the bottom and ended up being one of the top leaders at AIA. Her struggles from poverty to victory is very tough as she started working at a very young age. Coming from a poor family, Lee Lean had to do part time teaching to help sustain her family. She then taught at an institution in the morning and afternoon, while she hosts her own tuition class at home till late every day.

But whatever she was earning was still not enough. Thankfully her brother introduced her to the idea of life insurance. She then focused her attention to learning more about the insurance field. With enough motivation, she underwent numerous trainings from AIA. Through hard work and perseverance she later on became one of top life planners at AIA which earned her accolades. “I was also able to work hard and effectively thanks to my motor bike which took me everywhere” Lee Lean said with a laugh. She indeed used her smarts to surpass challenges of being a life insurance agents.

She compares herself to Abraham Lincoln, as he has passion for helping others and he was not a quitter, which is what Madam Lee Lean is—a fighter.

Today, Lee Lean holds her own insurance agency called APPS Sdn Bhd (an abbreviation of Attitude, Personality, Perseverance and Skill). This company teaches the real core of financial planning through life insurance.

Despite her hardships, Lee Lean kept pursuing her dreams. She is now enjoying the fruits of her labor, being able to travel around the world and not to mention the amount of quality time she gained with her family.

I was greatly honored to be given a chance to chat with her and be inspired by her words directly last month.

REIA: HOW WOULD DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN TWO WORDS?

LEE LEAN: Burning Desire (laughs)

REIA: HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU HAD YOUR FIRST PAYING JOB?

LEE LEAN: When I was 12 years old. I was already earning that time.

REIA: CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT A TIME WHEN YOU ALMOST GAVE UP ON YOUR CAREER?

LEE LEAN: When I became a mother at age 27, when I really enjoyed being a mother for the first time. It is a natural reaction of a mother to forget about career because of the love for your baby. But I ended up going on pause for 6 months only because I realise that I am a career lady afterall after resting at home for too long! (laughs)

REIA: TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAILURES.

LEE LEAN: Actually, I don’t have “failure” in my mind. I don’t believe in that word. I just think that I have not yet “reached my goal”, that’s all. Every step for me is effort contributing towards success.

REIA: YOU KNOW YOU SHOULD START BECOMING A MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER!

LEE LEAN: In fact I already am! I conduct my own workshop occassionally, surrounding topics like “learn to develop your full potential”. Besides that, I also talk about NAC, neuro association conditioning.

REIA: ARE YOU PLANNING TO DO ANOTHER WORKSHOP?

LEE LEAN: Yes, my next session will most likely take place this coming September, after our recruitment event in KLCC. Actually me and my team will be participating in the CareerBuilder Fair held at KLCC Convention Centre from August 22 – 23, 11AM until 6PM both days. We will be recruiting future entrepreneurs and talk about business start up in the insurance industry. Drop by and visit us at Booth C05 if you’re free! Then on September I’ll have a general talk in people motivation. It’s going to be a half-day workshop, inclusive of lunch and dinner plus materials for RM 49.90. More details of this motivational talk will be updated on APPS official website (www.apps-aia.com).

REIA: WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BECOME A LEADER SOMEDAY?

LEE LEAN: Actually, the first place to begin is within you… yourself. Everything starts in your mind, your belief and values, your philosophy in your career. When you want to become a leader it’s either you want to earn money or you want to nurture people. If you want to just earn money, then you will suffer tremendously. One of the responsibilities of a leader is nurturing people, it is not about overriding your subordinates. The choice of words is very important as well. Be sure to maintain a positive mindset then you’re already on your way to being a successful leader in the future.

Grab the chance to meet her at the upcoming Career Builder Fair 2015
@ KLCC on 22 & 23 August (11AM – 6PM), booth C05.

  • Hi Reia,

Great post. I think it’s great that you covered an inspirational woman. I think our patricahal society makes it even harder for women, much more to achieve something in their life. Keep up the good work!

  • interesting post to read, wow she earns when she is young. Hehe.. not many people start earning at early age.

  • Wow… Definitely a very inspiring lady… We can definitely get motivated by her….

  • Wow. Earning at the age of 12? She must have already had the career blood in her. But its an inspiring read to know that she almost gave up, and decided to continue again after 6 months of stopping.
